Chester French - Love The Future

Mr. LifFor an artist, the key to maintaining one’s own identity is to steer clear of drawing inspiration from like-sounding artists. Years back, Method Man would listen to Miles Davis when he recorded, and ironically Fiona Apple would listen to Method Man (the whole Wu-Tang Clan in fact). As Hip Hop artists broaden their horizons in sound and style, the music they draw inspiration from starts to veer further and further from Rap. Years from now, DXnext artists Chester French will be the group they still play in the studio.

Mike Jones - The Voice

Mike JonesRewind back to 2005. Almost four years ago to the day, Houston’s Mike Jones released his debut, Who Is Mike Jones? And so began the year-long domination of Houston Hip Hop and Swisha House. The irony of Jones’ self-deprecating album title and debut is that he again has fallen into relative obscurity since. Between label politics downgrading his second album to an EP and the short attention span of fans, “who is Mike Jones” may be a legitimate question to some. With The Voice, Jones attempts to recapture the success of his debut.

Mr. Lif - I Heard It Today

Mr. LifMr. Lif is a rarity in Hip Hop. This isn’t speaking to the fact that he’s what many people would label as a “conscious emcee,” but rather that he strikes a nice balance that very few rappers (including ones falling into that category) seem to be capable of. Rather than be scathing to the point of exhaustion like Immortal Technique, Lif is calculating with his indignation, and expresses it without shoving it down your throat.
